Manufacturing output over 11 percent down in October

In October 2023, the average daily output of the Dutch manufacturing industry was 11.1 percent lower than in October 2022, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS). Output also contracted year on year in the preceding months of 2023.

Decrease in most industries

Most industries produced less than in the same month last year. Among the larger industries, output fell most sharply in the chemical industry, while repair and installation of machinery recorded the largest increase.

Output decreased in October

A more accurate picture of short-term output developments is obtained when figures are adjusted for seasonal effects and the working-day pattern. After adjustments, manufacturing output fell by 0.5 percent between September and October.

Adjusted for seasonal and working-day effects, manufacturing output is seen to fluctuate significantly. In the spring of 2020, output declined rapidly and a low point was reached in May 2020. After that, output picked up again, until May 2022. The trend has reversed since then.

Manufacturers again less negative in November

Dutch manufacturers were less negative in November than one month previously. They were less negative about the expected output in the next three months and current stocks of finished products.

Germany is an important market for the Dutch manufacturing industry. In November, German entrepreneurs showed a slightly lower confidence than in October, according to Eurostat. In October, the average daily output generated by the German manufacturing industry was down by 3.5 percent year on year. Relative to September, output fell by 0.5 percent, as reported by Destatis.
