Cookies
www.cbs.nl (and other websites falling under the cbs.nl domain) uses cookies and web statistics. Below you can read why. And you can see exactly which cookies www.cbs.nl places and for what purpose.
Two different legal instruments apply to cookies:
- General Data Protection Regulation
- Dutch Telecommunications Act
General Data Protection Regulation
www.cbs.nl uses cookies for research and web statistics to analyse how visitors use the website. This information helps to improve the website. For example, by adding more information and increasing user-friendliness.
This is why, like all other websites, www.cbs.nl collects the IP addresses of website visitors. These are stored in so-called log files, which are kept for 90 days. Storage and viewing of these files are strictly for security purposes.
CBS has taken measures to minimise the traceability of its website visitors. This is achieved by letting Piwik Pro remove the final 2 octets (2 groups of eight bits) of each IP address immediately.
This means it is no longer possible for CBS to process any personal data, as no such data reach CBS.
No personal data whatsoever are shared with third parties unless this is necessary to report criminal offences.
Dutch Telecommunications Act
In general, websites must ask users for their consent before they place cookies. The so-called Dutch Cookie Act makes an exception for cookies that are not privacy-sensitive. For example, cookies that are necessary for the proper functioning of the website.
Essential cookies
No user consent is necessary for cookies that do not invade the privacy of users. These are often cookies which are necessary for improved functionality of the website.

Website usage analysis cookies
User consent is not necessary for cookies that do not or hardly affect privacy. These are often cookies which help improve the functionality of the website. Our analytical cookies also fall into this category. They are used by websites to collect visitor statistics, for example. They provide more information on the website’s performance. Analytical cookies barely affect the privacy of users.

Analytical cookies
CBS conducts user surveys on www.cbs.nl. This is done with Usabilla. Survey scripts determine whether survey questions are displayed to a visitor and which survey questions these are. The script lets the web browser of the visitor check whether this visitor has already participated in a survey recently, or whether they previously indicated they do not wish to cooperate. With the help of a cookie and data in LocalStorage, the answers provided by survey respondents are linked to their website behaviour. This is done on an anonymous basis and does not involve any personal data whatsoever. The following cookies and data in Local Storage are used for the survey.
