Two different legal instruments apply to cookies:
- General Data Protection Regulation
- Dutch Telecommunications Act
General Data Protection Regulation
This is why, like all other websites, www.cbs.nl collects the IP addresses of website visitors. These are stored in so-called log files, which are kept for 90 days. Storage and viewing of these files are strictly for security purposes.
CBS has taken measures to minimise the traceability of its website visitors. This is achieved by letting Google Analytics remove the final octet (group of eight bits) of each IP address immediately. From all IP addresses processed by Piwik Pro the final 2 octets (2 groups of eight bits) are immediately removed.
This means it is no longer possible for CBS to process any personal data, as no such data reach CBS.
No personal data whatsoever are shared with third parties unless this is necessary to report criminal offences.
Dutch Telecommunications Act
In general, websites must ask users for their consent before they place cookies. The so-called Dutch Cookie Act makes an exception for cookies that are not privacy-sensitive. For example, cookies that are necessary for the proper functioning of the website.
No user consent is necessary for cookies that do not invade the privacy of users. These are often cookies which are necessary for improved functionality of the website.
|_c49b3||Identification of browser session|
|Website#lang||Primary language of the user|
|__cfduid||Set up a secure connection|

Website usage analysis cookies
User consent is not necessary for cookies that do not or hardly affect privacy. These are often cookies which help improve the functionality of the website. Our analytical cookies also fall into this category. They are used by websites to collect visitor statistics, for example. They provide more information on the website’s performance. Analytical cookies barely affect the privacy of users.
CBS has taken measures to minimise the traceability of its website visitors. This is achieved by letting Google Analytics remove the final octet (group of eight bits) of each IP address immediately. In order to safeguard user privacy, CBS closely follows the guidelines provided in the PDF document ‘Handleiding privacyvriendelijk instellen van Google Analytics’ (Dutch only) as published by the Dutch Data Protection Authority (AP). From all IP addresses processed by Piwik Pro the final 2 octets (2 groups of eight bits) are immediately removed.
The collected information is used by www.cbs.nl for no other purpose than to improve the website. The table below shows you which cookies are related to web statistics on www.cbs.nl.

CBS conducts user surveys on www.cbs.nl. This is done with Usabilla. Survey scripts determine whether survey questions are displayed to a visitor and which survey questions these are. The script lets the web browser of the visitor check whether this visitor has already participated in a survey recently, or whether they previously indicated they do not wish to cooperate. With the help of a cookie and data in LocalStorage, the answers provided by survey respondents are linked to their website behaviour. This is done on an anonymous basis and does not involve any personal data whatsoever. The following cookies and data in Local Storage are used for the survey.
|usbls||Is the visitor new or has the visitor visited the website before?|
|ppms_webstorage||Stores data about the created cookies for webstatistics starting with_pkenstg. This is the same data that was used to create the cookies.|
|usbl.buttonId.v||Is the visitor new, or has the visitor visited the website before?|
|Ensure that visitors are asked to participate in a user survey at a given time. For example: after completion of a task.|
