Excess mortality in three of the four weeks in September

In the last week of September (week 39: 26 September to 2 October 2022 inclusive), the estimated number of deaths stood at 3,100. This is slightly more than in the previous week (2,969) and more than the expected number for this period. There were altogether around 750 more deaths than expected in September, with excess mortality in three of the four weeks. Mortality was up mainly among long-term care recipients and people aged 65 and over. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on the latest provisional weekly mortality figures.

The mortality figures for September cover four weeks, namely weeks 36 through 39 (5 September to 2 October 2022 inclusive). In each of these weeks, mortality was higher than expected and in three of the four weeks it fell outside the usual range of fluctuations, resulting in excess mortality. Excess mortality was recorded in all weeks of August. In that month, on average almost 300 more deaths than expected were recorded each week; by September, this had decreased to 200.

Excess mortality in September mainly among long-term care recipients

In week 39, mortality among people receiving care under the Long-term Care Act (Wlz), including residents of nursing homes and institutions for the disabled, increased compared to the previous week. Among the rest of the population, mortality rose slightly, based on the estimate. There were approximately 1,200 deaths among long-term care recipients and around 1,900 deaths among the rest of the population. This was more than expected for both groups; among long-term care users, there was excess mortality.

In the whole month of September, 500 more deaths than expected were recorded among long-term care recipients. There was excess mortality in two of the four weeks. Among the rest of the population, there were around 300 excess deaths; in this group; mortality fell within the range of usual fluctuations in each week.

Elevated mortality in September mainly among over-65s

Among the population aged 80 and over, mortality increased to an estimated 1,700 deaths in week 39. This is nearly 200 more than expected for this period, resulting in excess mortality. In the whole of September, there were around 350 more deaths than expected among the over-80s. There was excess mortality in two of the four weeks in this age group.

Among people aged 65 to 79 years, an estimated 1,050 deaths were recorded in week 39, around 150 more than expected. An estimated 400 excess deaths were recorded among this group over the whole month of September, with excess mortality in two of the four weeks.

Among people under 65, mortality in week 39 was estimated at 350, somewhat lower than expected. This age group had slightly more deaths than expected for the month of September. There was no excess mortality.

There were over 200 more male deaths than expected for the month of September; excess mortality only occurred in the last week. There were nearly 550 more female deaths than expected, with excess mortality in three of the four weeks.

COVID-19 mortality known up to May inclusive

The figures on (excess) mortality are based on municipal death records as received by CBS on a daily basis. These reports do not contain any information about the cause of death. CBS receives such information at a later stage via death cause certificates. The cause of death is known for all deceased persons up to and including May 2022. According to the latest CBS figures, 44,485 people died due to COVID-19 between March 2020 and May 2022. Aside from the coronavirus pandemic, the Netherlands had an influenza epidemic for 13 consecutive weeks, starting in mid-March.

Estimate for week 39

The figures for week 39 of 2022 are estimates, based on the assumption that 83 percent of all death records were received by CBS. CBS will publish provisional weekly mortality figures for week 39 on Friday 14 October. The figures will be more complete by then.
