Economic opportunities

Important in a greener economy is that the goods and services produced are cleaner and more resource efficient. This transition in production processes creates opportunities for new economic activities, generating new jobs and stimulating economic growth.

The share of the environmental sector in employment and GDP is increasing. Around the world, higher output of environmental goods and services reduces the pressure on the environment and natural resources. Green jobs are mainly concentrated in waste and waste water management, and in construction. The renewable energy sector, consisting of companies active in energy saving, renewable energy production and renewable energy systems, is currently small but growing rapidly. Both the number and the share of applications for green patents have grown considerably over the past two decades. This reflects an upward trend in inventiveness and knowledge in the field of green technologies. Also shares of environmental investments have risen slightly during that period. Environmental investments are important factors in achieving green growth.
