One in ten employees do not participate in supplementary pension schemes

One in every ten employees in the Netherlands do not build up a supplementary pension via their employers. They have to live on their old age pension (AOW) or make arrangements themselves to build up a supplementary pension through an annuity insurance and/or other individual arrangements.
The sector commercial services had the highest proportion of employees without supplementary pension arrangements ((19 percent), whereas in the sector non-commercial services almost every employee participated in a supplementary pension scheme.

People working for small companies, less often participate in supplementary pension schemes than those working for large companies. In 2007, one quarter of employees in small companies did not participate in pension schemes via their employers, as against 7 percent of people working for large companies employing 100 persons or more. Employees earning high annual wages less often participate in supplementary pension schemes.
