Biodiversity is the variability among living organisms and the ecosystems of which they are part. As biodiversity is an important theme within the Natural Capital Accounts, it is presented in a separate account. Biodiversity is a main indicator for the condition of ecosystems and a factor in the ecosystem services they can provide. In addition to diversity of species within types of ecosystems, biodiversity also includes information on ecological diversity, genetic diversity and indicators for populations and distribution of specific animal and plant species.
