This report brings together existing knowledge on the relationships between ecosystem extent, ecosystem condition, ecosystem services, socioeconomic factors, and environmental pressures within the Natural Capital Accounts framework.
Forests provide a wide range of ecosystem services, including timber provision, carbon sequestration, pollination, nature recreation, and nature tourism. These services do not occur in isolation but are shaped by the extent and condition of forests, as well as by socioeconomic factors and environmental pressures.

This publication uses the forest ecosystem as a case study to explore these interrelationships within the Natural Capital Accounts framework. The analysis identifies factors that influence multiple ecosystem services simultaneously, highlights potential synergies and trade-offs, and discusses current data gaps that limit the spatial and quantitative assessment of these relationships.

This publication was prepared by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) in collaboration with Wageningen University & Research (WUR) as part of the ongoing development of the Natural Capital Accounts.
