In 2025, 80 percent of companies made it possible for their employees to work remotely, such as from home. Around 60 percent of all employees were able to make use of this option in practice. There has been no change in these figures since 2022. In the years before that, however, there was an increase. This is according to Statistics Netherlands’ publication on digitisaation and the knowledge economy.

In 2012, 59 percent of companies made it possible for their employees to work remotely. By 2021 this had increased to 83 percent, but since then the percentage has remained flat at around 80 percent. Remote working is defined as a situation in which employees who are off the organisation’s premises are able to access documents or software, so it involves more than just e-mail.

Not all workers can work remotely because the nature of their work does not allow for it. In 2025, 61 percent of employees were able to work remotely, up from 22 percent in 2012. This percentage has remained broadly unchanged since 2022. Rates of remote working increased significantly during the coronavirus pandemic, in particular.
