Goods exports to US down in first 10 months of 2025

© CBS
The total value of goods exports to the United States was 4.7 percent lower in the first 10 months of 2025, year on year. The decline began in July 2025. Prior to that, the value of goods exported from the Netherlands to the US was still on the rise. While the value of re-exports and goods imports from the US continued to grow in the first 10 months of 2025, domestic exports (goods produced in the Netherlands) did not. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this on the basis of newly released figures on international trade in goods.

In the ten months up to and including October 2025, the Netherlands exported goods to the value of 27.5 billion to the United States. The figure for the same period of 2024 was 28.9 billion euros. Exports to the US have fallen every month since July, on a year-on-year basis. The export value of products manufactured in the Netherlands has fallen, in particular (down by 8 percent). Re-exports to the US have grown by 3.9 percent, by contrast.

Trade with the United States has faced challenges in recent months. The US has made various announcements regarding import tariffs. In the first half of the year, trade in both directions between the Netherlands and the US continued to grow, possibly because companies were seeking to get ahead of the announced import tariffs.

Fall in export value of mineral fuels

The value of Dutch exports of mineral fuels to the US was down by 2.2 billion euros, compared with 2024. This is partly due to lower fuel prices. The Netherlands also exported nearly 300 million euros less in chemical products.

The export value of machinery and transport equipment, both Dutch-made and re-exports, continued to grow in the first half of 2025. This group includes specialised machinery, ships and boats. However, the export value of machinery has been falling since August. Domestic exports (products manufactured in the Netherlands) have declined, in particular. Exports of ships and boats are chiefly made up of a smaller number of large, one-off transactions.

Meanwhile, mineral fuels imports from the US are down, both in terms of volume and due to lower prices. In the category the import value is nearly 1.5 billion euros lower than in the same period of 2024. Imports of manufactured goods imported from the US are also down, including professional (scientific) instruments.
