Retail turnover up by 1.5 percent in December

Now that the December figure is known, the full-year figure can be provided as well. The Dutch retail sector achieved 2.1 percent higher turnover growth in 2024 compared to 2023.
The figures for retail turnover have been adjusted for calendar days in December, because more is sold on certain days of the week than on other days. Without such an adjustment, retail turnover in December 2024 would have been 0.1 percent higher than one year previously.

Turnover in non-food sector up by almost 5 percent
Turnover in the non-food sector was up by 4.6 percent in December, year on year. Sales volume (turnover adjusted for price changes) was up by 4.8 percent on December 2023.
Shops selling DIY products (including kitchens and flooring), shops selling recreational goods and those selling home furnishings saw year-on-year turnover growth in December. Turnover of clothes shops remained the same, while shops selling consumer electronics and white good, shops selling footwear and leather products, and chemists recorded a decrease in turnover.
Turnover in food sector down by 4.0 percent
Turnover in shops selling food, beverages and tobacco was down by 4.0 percent in December, year on year. Sales volume was 8.2 percent lower. Turnover in supermarkets was down by 5.7 percent, while turnover in specialty shops was up by 5.6 percent.

Online turnover 12.5 percent higher
Turnover among online retailers was up by 12.5 percent in December, year on year. Online retailers (whose core activity is selling goods and services over the internet) recorded an increase in turnover of 15.6 percent. Meanwhile, multi-channel retailers (retailers selling goods and services over the internet as a secondary activity) saw turnover in their online sales incline by 0.8 percent.
Online turnover for consumer electronics, for other non-food products, for clothing and fashion items and for food and personal care products was higher in December 2024 than it was one year previously.

Retail turnover over 2 percent higher in 2024
In 2024, retail turnover, adjusted for shopping days, was 2.1 percent higher than one year previously. That was the lowest growth rate in ten years. Sales volume was up by 1.4 percent on 2023. Non-food shops achieved 3.9 percent growth, while turnover of food shops was 1.0 percent lower.
Online turnover was 5.8 percent higher than it was in 2023. Online retailers recorded an increase in turnover of 9.0 percent. Meanwhile, multi-channel retailers saw turnover in their online sales rise by 1.4 percent.
