Retail turnover over 3 percent up in November

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports for November 2023 that the Dutch retail sector recorded 3.2 percent year-on-year turnover growth. Sales volume was down by 0.8 percent. Turnover in the food sector increased by 4.8 percent, while in the non-food sector it rose by 0.7 percent. Furthermore, online retail turnover decreased by 0.3 percent year on year.

Retail turnover data have been adjusted for the shopping-day pattern in November, as these may vary from one day to the next. If the shopping-day pattern is not taken into account, retail turnover in November 2023 was 3.7 percent higher than in the same month last year.

Turnover in non-food sector almost 1 percent up

In November, turnover in the non-food sector was up by 0.7 percent year on year. Sales volume (turnover adjusted for price changes) was down 2.1 percent from one year previously.

Drugstores and shops selling consumer electronics and white goods saw year-on-year turnover growth in November. However, shops selling footwear and leather products, shops selling furniture and home furnishings, clothes shops, shops selling DIY products, including kitchens, flooring and those selling recreational goods recorded a decrease in turnover in November.

Turnover of food shops almost 5 percent up

Shops selling food, beverages and tobacco recorded 4.8 percent higher turnover in November than in the same month last year. Sales volume was 1.7 percent lower. Turnover at supermarkets and specialist shops was up by 5.1 and 3.3 percent, respectively.

Online turnover 0.3 percent lower

In November, online turnover was down by 0.3 percent year on year. Web shops recorded a turnover increase of 4.6 percent; their core activity is selling goods and services over the internet. However, multi-channel retailers (retailers selling goods and services over the internet as a side activity) recorded 6.7 percent lower turnover in online sales.

Online turnover of food and personal care products was higher in November 2023 than it was one year previously, while that of other non-food products, consumer electronics, and clothing and fashion items was lower.
