Surface water and groundwater

Groundwater is water which is pumped up from the subsoil or which comes to the surface. The water can be fresh, salt or brackish.

Surface water is water from inland waterways such as rivers, lakes, canals (except groundwater), transition waters, coastal waters and, as far as its chemical consistency is concerned, also territorial waters (including the sea).
