Turnover accommodation and food services 2.1 percent up

As reported by Statistics Netherlands (CBS), turnover in the sector accommodation and food services rose by 2.1 percent in Q1 2018 relative to the preceding quarter. The volume of sales (food, refreshments and/or overnight stays) grew by 1 percent. Food and beverage service turnover increased by 2.3 percent, while accommodation services grew by 1.6 percent. Turnover in the sector accommodation and food services has increased each quarter for almost five consecutive years.

Largest turnover growth for restaurants in 1.5 years

In Q1, turnover generated by food and beverage services (including restaurants, fast food restaurants, canteens and catering, and cafes) rose by 2.3 percent relative to the previous quarter. The volume of sales increased by 1.5 percent. Restaurants recorded the highest turnover growth (3.2 percent). It was also the highest growth for restaurants in 1.5 years. Fast food restaurants, canteens and catering, and cafes also achieved turnover growth.

Turnover accommodation services also up in Q1

Relative to Q4 2017, accommodation services realised a turnover growth of 1.6 percent. However, the volume of sales decreased by 0.3 percent. Turnover generated by hotels grew by 1.3 percent.

With effect from the reporting quarter Q1 2018, this news release refers to accommodation services, including hotels, holiday homes and campsites, and to food and beverage services, including restaurants, fast food restaurants, canteens and catering, and cafes. Previously, this news release focused on the sector hotels and restaurants, traditionally comprising hotels, restaurants and cafes. Their turnover rose by 2.2 percent in Q1 2018.

With effect from the reporting quarter Q1 2018, turnover figures of the sector accommodation and food services are published using 2015 as the base year (previously 2010=100). This means that the indices are based on the turnover and price weightings from 2015.
