This article focuses on the use of social networks. It concerns three activities that are conducted via the Internet, namely: 1. instant messaging, for example via Skype Messenger or WhatsApp, 2. participating in a professional network such as LinkedIn, 3. participating in another social network such as Facebook or Twitter. With regard to these activities, the ICT survey inquires into one’s use of the Internet for private purposes during the three months prior to the survey. In ICT statistics, social networks are a subset of social media, including activities like ‘posting messages on a chat site, in a newsgroup or in an online discussion forum’ and ‘reading or maintaining weblogs’.
