Holiday accommodations more popular

The Dutch did not skimp on domestic holidays in 2009. Last year, Dutch holiday accommodations welcomed more guests from the Netherlands than in 2008. Camping sites and holiday cottage parks last year reported the most substantial turnover growth (nearly 4 percent) since 2003. In the third quarter of 2009, turnover increased by no less than 7 percent.

In the second and third quarter of 2009, the busiest periods for the sector recreational accommodations, holiday cottage parks and camping sites accommodated 7.8 million people, an increase by over 8 percent relative to the same period one year previously. The majority of tourists were Dutch. The share of Dutch guests has varied around 80 percent for years. The amount of foreign guests in Dutch recreational accommodations also increased.

Dutch tourists also spent more nights in holiday accommodations. In the second and third quarter of 2009, the number of overnight stays of Dutch guests in recreational accommodations rose by 4.3 percent compared to the second and third quarter of 2008.
