The ecosystem unit map delineates ecosystem units in the Netherlands to six main themes; agriculture, dunes and beaches, forests and other (semi) natural and unpaved terrain, marshes and floodplains, water and paved and built-up land. It serves as a basis for determining areas and changes therein for ecosystem services.

Commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs ecosystem services for the Netherlands are composed. As a source for ecosystem services an ecosystem map delineating areas for Natural Capital and ecosystem services is compiled. Ecosystem services is the ability of nature to provide useful goods and services for society. Examples include vegetation and soils sequestering CO2, dunes protecting the land and nature providing recreational value.

Maps are compiled for the reference years 2006 and 2013.
