The ‘Areas of sustainability’ infographic shows the development of sustainable development indicators for 14 policy areas. These indicators are intended as handles for policymakers to intervene in the case of adverse trends in the main indicators. For example: obesity – a factor in healthy life expectancy - can be influenced by government measures. Exclamation marks indicate theme areas where developments in the Netherlands are cause for concern.
Developments in the Netherlands since 2000 are shown for each individual indicator. The development is summed up in a coloured arrow. The direction of the arrow indicates whether the trend is increasing or decreasing, and the colour indicates the effect of the indicator on sustainable development.
The position of the Netherlands compared with other European countries is also presented (green - good; yellow - neutral; red - poor).
