Dutch more and more enterprising
In the Netherlands, enterprises setting up business outnumber those that are closing down. In 2011 the number of enterprises grew by nearly 7 percent.
Fewer new businesses in 2009
Last year, 35.4 thousand new businesses were started, a decline by 9 percent relative to 2008.
23 thousand people with a non-Dutch nationality start up their own business
One in six new firms started up in the Netherlands in 2014 were owned by persons with at least one non-Dutch nationality.
Slightly fewer new companies in 2008
In 2008 38.7 thousand new companies joined the Dutch business community, providing work for some 51.7 thousand people. The number of new companies lagged a little behind the 2007 number.
20 percent more business closures in 2020
In 2020, over 140 thousand companies were dissolved. This is over 20 percent more than in 2019, when the number of company dissolutions stood at 115 thousand.
Largest number of enterprise births since 2009
In 2017 there were 73 thousand more enterprise births than deaths, the highest number since 2009.
Record number of enterprise births in 2019
In 2019, over 207 thousand new enterprises were established in the Netherlands, 23 thousand more than in the previous year. The number of enterprise births within one year has never been this high.
More than 2 million enterprises for the first time
In 2021, the total enterprise population in the Netherlands grew by 163 thousand or 8.5 percent, thereby exceeding 2 million for the first time as of 1 January 2022.
