Fewer new businesses in 2009

Last year, 35.4 thousand new businesses were started, a decline by 9 percent relative to 2008.

Fewer new construction firms

The decline in new businesses is particularly noticeable in the construction sector, where the number of new businesses dropped by 3 thousand relative 2008. The amount of starting self-employed without personnel (zzp workers) dropped significantly compared to one year ago. The same applies to publicans, self-employed haulers, consultancy agencies and temp agencies.

Notable increase in interior and fashion designers setting up their own businesses

A relatively large number of interior and fashion designers started up their own businesses in 2009. There is also an increase in agencies providing office and translation services. There was also an increase in the number of starting ICT businesses (mail order companies) and businesses specialised in digital photography.
