Biocides

© Hollandse Hoogte
Biocides are used daily, for example insecticides, attractants and repellents, and wood preservatives. Knowledge about the use of biocides in the Netherlands is currently lacking, which is is needed to test and adjust the effects of policies. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) is therefore conducting an exploratory study to see if data on Biocides can be collected.

What are Biocides?

Biocides are used to control pests and bacteria. There are 22 product types (PTs). In this CBS study, we focus on 4 PTs:

PT 8: Wood preservatives.

Used for the preservation of wood, from and including the saw-mill stage, or wood products by the control of wood-destroying or wood-disfiguring organisms, including insects. This product type includes both preventive and curative products.

PT 13: Working or cutting fluid preservatives.

Products to control microbial deterioration in fluids used for working or cutting metal, glass or other materials.

PT 18: Insecticides, acaricides and products to control other arthropods.

Used for the control of arthropods (e.g. insects, arachnids and crustaceans), by means other than repulsion or attraction.

PT 19: R

epellents and attractants.

Used to control harmful organisms (invertebrates such as fleas, vertebrates such as birds, fish, rodents), by repelling or attracting, including those that are used for human or veterinary hygiene either directly on the skin or indirectly in the environment of humans or animals.

We want to use the exploratory study of these PTs to make a first estimate of what is sold in the Netherlands.

The introduction of biocides on the market is officially regulated by means of authorisations. According to the data of the Board for the Authorisation of Plant Protection Products and Biocides (Ctgb), your organisation is listed as authorisation holder of one or more biocides falling under PT 8, PT 13, PT18 and/or PT 19.

Your data and feedback are highly valued to conduct explanatory research. This allows us to align our data collection better to what works best for you when providing data.
