Biocides

Biocides, such as insecticides, attractants, repellents, and wood preservatives, are used every day. With biocides we control unwanted organisms like pests, bacteria, and fungi. Currently, there is a lack of insight into the presence of biocides in the Netherlands. This hinders effective policy evaluation and adjustments.

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) is conducting an exploratory study to gather sales data on biocides. The Biocides Platform (Platform Biociden) will act as an interlocutor and represent the sector's interests. By participating in this study, one can have a direct influence on the way in which a potential sales register is designed in the future.

Focus of this study

Bringing biocides to the Dutch market is officially regulated via authorisations. In this study, the collection of sales data of biocides is done among authorisation holders. There are 22 product types (PTs). In this CBS survey, we focus on four PTs.

PT 8: Wood preservatives

Products for the preservation of wood, from and including the sawmill stage, or wood products by control of wood-destroying or wood-damaging organisms, including insects. This product type includes both preventive and curative products.

PT 13: Working or cutting fluid preservatives

Products to control bacterial attack in fluids used for working or cutting metal, glass or other materials

PT 18: Insecticides, acaricides and products to control other arthropods

Products to control arthropods (e.g. insects, arachnids and crustaceans) by means other than repelling or attracting.

PT 19: Repellents and attractants

Products used to control harmful organisms (invertebrates such as fleas, or vertebrates such as birds, fish and rodents) by repelling or attracting, including those used for human and animal hygiene, either directly on the skin or indirectly in the environment of humans or animals.
