Number of millionaires rises again: up by 81 thousand in 2025

© ANP / Peter Hilz

On 1 January 2025, 6.6 percent of households in the Netherlands had assets worth 1 million euros or more. That was a total of 547 thousand households, a year-on-year increase of 81 thousand. This is mainly due to the rise in house prices. Bloemendaal and Laren are home to a relatively large number of millionaires: almost two in five households are millionaires. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this on the basis of new figures on wealth and assets. The figures take account of both the value of people’s homes and any mortgage debt they may have.

The median net worth of a millionaire household. That means that 50 percent of them had fewer assets (between 1 and 1.5 million euros) and 50 percent had more. Median household wealth in the non-millionaire category was 131 thousand euros.

Millionaires are older than non-millionaires, on average

The main breadwinners in millionaire households are older, on average, than those in non-millionaire households. In 2025, millionaires were 61 years old on average, meaning they were 9 years older than non-millionaires. Slightly less than 3 percent of millionaires are younger than 35. Nearly 70 percent are aged 55 years or older, compared with 46 percent of non-millionaires.

Most wealth consists of substantial business interests and business assets

Of millionaires' assets, 39 percent consist of substantial business interests (defined as ownership of at least 5 percent of a company’s shares) and business assets. The value of their own homes represented 29 percent of their assets. Among non-millionaire households, homeownership accounts for nearly 80 percent of wealth, while substantial interest and business assets account for 3 percent.

Among younger millionaire households, substantial business interests and business assets make up the largest share of assets. This share decreases as millionaires get older, while the share of homeownership increases, by contrast.
