The date with most birthdays is 30 September

30 September 2025 was the day on which most people in the Netherlands celebrated their birthdays: around 44 thousand. Seven other days in late September are also among the ten most common birthdays. New Year’s Day is the day on which the fewest people are born (31.3 thousand). This is according to new figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

Many people were born in September

September is also the month with the most birthdays. In addition to 30 September, 20, 23, 24, 25, 27, 28 and 29 September are all in the top ten when it comes to birthdays, which also includes 2 and 3 May. Every day of the year, an average of over 41 thousand people in the Netherlands celebrate their birthday.

These figures relate to over 15 million people born in the Netherlands whose date of birth was officially registered with a local municipality.

Fewer birthdays on public holidays

Fewest birthdays fall on New Year’s Day and 29 February: 31.3 thousand. This is also the case for other public holidays with a fixed date, like Christmas and Boxing Day, Sinterklaas (5 December) and Liberation Day (5 May). The reason for this is that some births can be planned ahead, such as caesarean sections, which are less likely to take place on public holidays. Conversely, there are more birthdays on the days immediately before or after those dates. There are fewer birthdays on 1 April, however. This is a regular working day with relatively few births, perhaps because parents avoid this date for planned hospital births.

More young people celebrate their birthday in late summer, older people in spring

People’s birthdays vary by generation. People who were born after 1980 are more likely than average to be born in summer or late summer. For people born between 1940 and 1980, the peak is in spring. People who were born before 1940 are more likely than average to be born in autumn, with the most birthdays falling in December.

The period in which most babies are born has shifted: most people used to be born in spring, but this has now shifted to late summer. This shift may be the result of contraceptives introduced in the 1960s, which made it easier to plan pregnancies.

In 2025, most babies were born on 16 September

In 2025, most babies were born on Tuesday 16 September: 565 in total. This was followed by 27 August (563 babies) and 20 June (561 babies). The ten dates on which the most babies were born all fell on weekdays. The fewest babies were born on 1 January (305 births), 23 February (310) and 2 November (320). Of the ten days with the fewest births, nine were Saturdays or Sundays, with the exception of New Year’s Day, which was a Wednesday.

More babies are born on weekdays, on average. This is probably because some parents opt for hospital births which are planned on weekdays when more birthing staff are available. In the past, when more women gave birth at home, there was a smaller difference in the number of births on weekdays and the number at weekends.
