Temporary Protection Directive

The Temporary Protection Directive (TPD) entitles refugees from Ukraine to accommodation and medical care in European Union and EFTA member states. Education for minor children is also covered, as well as the opportunity to work.

The directive would have been in force until 4 March 2024, but has been extended by one year. This means that the TPD will, in principle, expire on 4 March 2025. If the Commission proposes this, the Council may in future decide to extend the temporary protection for another year. The temporary protection ends when the directive expires, or sooner if the Council finds that a safe return to Ukraine is possible.
