Most common causes of death

As of 1996, causes of death are coded and counted using ICD-10 codes. According to the level of detail of reporting on the causes of death statement, a cause of death of the same nature is found under different ICD-10 codes. The selection of underlying causes of death is performed using internationally agreed instructions so that one cause of death per deceased can be included in the statistics.

Dementia (ICD-10: F01-F03, G30-G31): a brain disorder characterised by more than one cognitive impairment (e.g. impaired memory, reasonability or recognising objects or faces). It includes vascular dementia (F01), Alzheimer's disease (G30), other neurodegenerative diseases such as Pick's disease (G31), and the unspecified-or mixed-forms of dementia (F03).

Stroke (ICD-10: I60-I69): collective name for cerebral vascular injuries. It includes haemorrhages around (subarachnoid haemorrhage, I60) and within the brain (intracerebral haemorrhage, I61-I62), cerebral infarctions (I63), cerebral vascular injuries unspecified at diagnosis (I64) and the after-effects of any of these (I69).
Heart failure (ICD-10: I50): reduced cardiac power leading to fluid accumulation in the body and/or lungs and failure to supply tissues with sufficient oxygen or nutrients.

Lung cancer (ICD-10: C33-C34): malignant neoplasms of the trachea (C33) or lung (C34).

Colorectal (including rectal) cancer (ICD-10: C18-C21): malignant neoplasms of the colon (C18), sigmoid (C19), rectum (C20) and anus (C21).

Breast cancer (ICD-10: C50): malignant neoplasms of the breast.

Prostate cancer (ICD-10: C61): malignant neoplasms of the prostate.

COVID-19 (ICD-10: U07): COrona VIrus Disease 19: disease caused by SARS-CoV2. Code U07 includes probable and suspected cases of COVID-19.

Disease caused by SARS-CoV2. Code U07 includes probable and suspected cases of COVID-19. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD (ICD-10: J40-J44, J47): a group of gradually arising, long-term lung diseases characterised by shortness of breath, coughing and an (irreversible) reduction in lung function. These include chronic or listed unspecified bronchitis (J40-J42), emphysema (J43), listed forms of COPD (J44) and associated pus accumulations in the lungs (bronchiectasiaēn) (J47).

Accidental falls (ICD-10: W00-W19): death within 30 days of an accident caused by unintentional falling, tripping or slipping of a person. Falling accidents involving a transport vehicle (such as a bicycle, moped or mobility scooter) are not registered as accidental falls but as transport accidents.

Ischaemic heart disease (ICD-10: I21, I24-I25) is caused by a reduced blood supply to the heart, usually due to a blockage or narrowing of the coronary arteries. This includes acute myocardial infarction (I21), other acute ischaemic heart disease (I24), and after-effects of myocardial infarction (I25).

Pneumonia (ICD-10 J12-J18): Inflammation of the lung tissue caused by a virus (J12), bacteria (J13-J15) or other micro-organism (J16-J17), or unspecified infection of the lung tissue (J18) when reported. These codes do not include chemical inflammation of lung tissue caused by choking.
