Accidental drowning

This news release contains two different aspects. Firstly, it presents figures on accidental drownings; these include indoor drowning (bathtub or indoor pool) and outdoor drowning. Drownings due to a transport accident, suicide, murder or other causes are not included. Secondly, figures are provided on non-accidental drownings, including suicidal drowning, transport accidents and other fatal drownings. Drowning deaths among inhabitants concern people who were residing in the Netherlands and were registered in the Key Register of Persons (BRP) at the time of death.
In the first graph, standardised mortality figures on accidental drowning per 100 thousand inhabitants are shown. To allow for a comparison over the years, standardisation takes place by converting figures from one year to another (standard) year, based on age or sex. In this news release, the age composition of the Dutch population in 2022 is used as a standard.

The graph on accidental drownings by origin shows a standardised death rate per 100 thousand inhabitants. The relative figures by origin are related to the number of inhabitants in each population group. Figures have been adjusted for differences in age composition, using the age composition of the population of Dutch origin as a standard.

During the 2013-2022 period, the age composition of the population of Dutch origin differed from that of the population of non-European origin. Therefore, data for this period on the population of non-European origin are shown in the graph as age-adjusted death rate per 100 thousand of the population according to the age composition of the population of Dutch origin (Standard Mortality).
