Median surface area

If all surface areas are ranked from low to high, the median surface area - also called average surface area - is equal to the middle value. This means that exactly half of the population has a smaller or same area and exactly half has a larger area.
The usage areas of dwellings are highly skewed; 95 percent of minors living at home live in a dwelling with an area of up to 250 m2. Relatively few children live in very large dwellings (over 250 m2). However, when the median area is calculated, those very large houses pull the median value to a level higher than the value associated with the most common surface areas; that distorts the picture. For this reason, the median area distribution is shown. This median (122 m2) is lower than the average (140 m2).
