Retail turnover over 5 percent up in November

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports for November 2021 that the Dutch retail sector recorded 5.2 percent year-on-year turnover growth. The volume of sales went up by 2.6 percent. Turnover in the non-food sector was up by 7.4 percent, while turnover in the food sector remained the same. Furthermore, online retail turnover increased by 5.2 percent. Relative to November 2019, the retail sector realised 15.9 percent more turnover in November 2021.

Retail turnover data have been adjusted for changes in the shopping-day pattern. Retail sales tend to vary from one day to the next. If the shopping-day pattern is not taken into account, retail turnover in November 2021 was 6.9 percent higher than in the same month last year.

Turnover in non-food sector over 7 percent higher

In November, turnover in the non-food sector was up by 7.4 percent year-on-year. The volume of sales (adjusted for price changes) grew by 3.4 percent compared to the same month last year. Relative to November 2019, turnover of non-food shops was up by over 14 percent in November 2021.

In November, turnover of clothes shops and shops selling footwear and leather products was again significantly higher than one year previously. It was also higher than in November 2019. Furthermore, shops selling personal care products, recreational goods, furniture and home furnishings, and those selling DIY products, kitchens and flooring recorded turnover growth, both relative to November 2020 and November 2019. On the other hand, shops selling consumer electronics and white goods achieved less turnover than twelve months previously, although it was more than two years previously.

Turnover of food shops unchanged

Shops selling food, beverages and tobacco achieved the same turnover in November 2021 as in the same month last year. The volume of sales was 1.4 percent lower. Turnover at specialist shops was up by 1.4 percent, while turnover at supermarkets was down by 0.2 percent year-on-year. Relative to November 2019, the food retail sector realised over 6 percent higher turnover.

Online turnover over 5 percent higher

In November, online turnover was up by 5.2 percent year-on-year. Web shops recorded a turnover increase of 8.6 percent; their core activity is selling goods and services over the internet. Multi-channel retailers (retailers selling goods and services over the internet as a side activity) achieved 1.1 percent higher turnover in online sales.

Online turnover of clothing and fashion items, food and personal care products, and other non-food products was higher in November 2021 than in the same month last year. However, online sales of consumer electronics were lower than in November 2020.
