House price increase higher again

In May 2021, owner-occupied dwellings (excluding new constructions) were on average 12.9 percent more expensive than in the same month last year, representing the largest increase since May 2001. The price rise moderated in 2019 but picked up again in 2020. This is evident from price monitoring of existing owner-occupied dwellings by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and The Netherlands’ Cadastre, Land Registry and Mapping Agency.

House prices show upward trend

House prices reached a low in June 2013; they have followed an upward trend since then, reaching a new record level in May 2021. Compared to the low in June 2013, house prices were 66.8 percent higher on average in May.

Fewer housing transactions

According to The Netherlands’ Cadastre, the total number of transactions recorded over the month of May 2021 stood at 16,126. This is 12.1 percent fewer than one year previously. In the first five months of this year, altogether 101,707 dwellings changed owners. This represents an increase of over 14.6 percent relative to the same period in 2020.
