More shrimp on Dutch menus in December

The popularity of the common shrimp (C. crangon) during the holiday season is clearly visible in the turnover development of Dutch supermarkets. In December 2018, shrimp revenues were four times higher than the average turnover during the other months of the year. In 2018, more than 24 million kg of common shrimp was landed in Dutch ports. This is more than double the volume over the previous year, as shown by the latest figures released by Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

Compared to 2013, the annual turnover of shrimp was up by almost one-quarter in 2018. Only in 2015, turnover was higher: up by 43 percent relative to 2013.

An upward trend was also seen in the first ten months of 2019. From January through October, turnover was nearly 40 percent up on the same period in 2018.

2018 was record year for shrimp landings

Up until 2009, shrimp landings fluctuated around 10 million kg per year. They were up in subsequent years, with a peak in 2018. Landings in Dutch ports amounted to more than 24 million kg of shrimp that year, more than double the volume in 2017.

The total quantity landed in 2018 will most likely not be reached in 2019; nearly 12 million kg of shrimp has been landed up to and including October of this year.

Peak of common shrimp landings in October

The peak in shrimp landings by fishermen is two months ahead of the turnover peak in Dutch supermarkets. In October, the bulk of shrimp landings are brought to shore, i.e. around 20 percent of the annual volume. This year, catches amounted to almost 3 million kg during the month of October.

Due to a subsequent drop in seawater temperatures, landings fall before increasing again before summer. When seawater temperatures become too low, the shrimp retreat to deeper waters.

Fluctuating landing prices

The price received by fishermen for one kilo of common shrimp fluctuates per season. Prices are often higher in the months with low-volume landings compared to high-volume months. However, this pattern is not visible in 2019. Since May 2018, prices per kg fluctuate around 2.70 euros.

A record price by far was recorded in June 2017, when fishermen received an average auction price of 12.44 euros per kg for 572 thousand kg of shrimp landings.
