People from outside the European Union, the European Economic Area, Turkey or Switzerland who wish to become long-term residents of the Netherlands and are between 18 and retirement age must take a civic integration exam. The duration of the civic integration procedure is limited to three years. Applicants are informed on the commencing date for this procedure by the executive government agency for education, DUO.
