Migration background in couples

Migration background in couples is determined based on the background of the female partner unless the female partner has a native Dutch background and the male partner has a migration background; in the latter case, the count is based on the background of the male partner.

In graph 1, three groups of couples are distinguished in which both partners have a migration background:
- ‘both partners migration background from the same country’ refers to couples consisting of either two first-generation migrants as partners or two second-generation partners, both with the same migration background;
- ‘both partners migration background and different countries’ means couples consisting of two partners with either a first-generation or second-generation migration background, but coming from two different backgrounds;
- ‘both partners migration background, 1st/2nd generation’ refers to couples consisting of one partner with a first-generation migration background while the other has a second-generation migration background.

In graph 2, ‘generation’ is determined based on the generation of the female half of the couple, unless the couple consists of a female partner with a native Dutch background and a male partner with a migration background. In the latter case, the generation is determined based on the male partner.
