2,385 asylum seekers and following relatives in August

Statistics Netherlands says 2,385 asylum seekers and applicants for family reunification were registered in the Netherlands in August 2016, an increase by 14 percent compared to July and two-thirds fewer than in August 2015. So far this year, 16.2 thousand asylum seekers and following relatives arrived in the Netherlands.

The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) received 1,675 first requests for asylum in August and 710 requests for family reunification.

Eritrea accounts for one in ten asylum seekers

Asylum seekers arriving in the Netherlands in August came from various countries; 185 came from Eritrea, 135 from Albania, 130 from Morocco and 130 from Serbia; 110 asylum seekers came from Syria. With 480, Syrian nationals constituted the majority of people being reunited with their families.

More than 16 thousand asylum seekers and following relatives in first eight months

In the period January-August 2016, 11.6 thousand asylum seekers and 4.6 thousand following relatives brought the total to 16.2 thousand. In the same period last year, the total was nearly 25 thousand, of whom 17 thousand were first requests.
