Optimism still prevailing among Dutch consumers

The mood among Dutch consumers remains positive in May. According to Statistics Netherlands(CBS), the consumer confidence indicator now stands at 1, the same as in April. The component indicator economic climate improved marginally while consumers’ willingness to buy remained the same.

With a score of + 1, the consumer confidence indicator is significantly above its long-term average over the past two decades (- 8). The indicator reached an all-time high in April 2000 (+ 27) and dipped to an all-time low in February 2013 (- 44).

Consumers slightly more optimistic about economic climate

In May, Dutch consumers are slightly more positive about the economy in general than in April. The component indicator economic climate has risen from + 4 in March to + 5 in May. Consumers are less positive about the economic situation in the past 12 months. The indicator slipped from +10 in April to + 8 in May. On the other hand, they are more positive about the economic situation in the next 12 months; the score rose from - 1 in April to + 2 in May.

Consumers’ willingness to buy remains stable in May. This component indicator of consumer confidence now stands at - 1, just as in April. Dutch consumers’ opinions about their personal financial situation have hardly changed in May. They think May is an equally good month to buy durable goods as April.
