More than 27 percent of Dutch employed were working from home part of their regular working hours in 2010. Proportionally, most people working at home are active in the sectors education and financial services and their level of education was usually high.

On average six hours a week

Just over 27 percent of employed were working at least 1 hour a week at home last year versus more than 25 percent in 2005. The number of hours people work from home has risen from 5.5 hours a week in 2005 to 6.2 hours a week in 2010.

The sector education has the highest proportion (more than 60 percent) of teleworkers. Teachers have been doing so for a long time. Preparing lessons and marking papers can easily be done at home. In financial services, in culture and other services and in commercial services, the number of people working from home is also relatively high.

Nearly half of higher educated work at home

Nearly half of higher educated were working at home on a regular basis in 2010 versus one in five of secondary-level educated employed and one in eight people with a low level of education.

More men than women work from home

Nearly 30 percent of men were working from home in 2010 and nearly 25 percent of women. Working at home is also more frequent among over-25s than among young people. In the 25-65 age bracket, three in every ten employed worked from home. With more than one in ten, the teleworking rate among 15 to 25-year-olds was considerably lower. This is partly due to the sectors in which this age category is active. Young people are, for example, more often employed in the sector hotels and restaurants.
