Netherlands second largest cabotage haulier in the European Union

Cabotage hauliers carried 77 million tons of goods in the European Union (EU) in 2009. Dutch hauliers accounted for 13 million tons. Germany is the only EU country to carry more goods within other EU member states than the Netherlands.

Luxembourg, Poland and Belgium important players in the cabotage market

Cabotage transport accounted for less than 1  percent of total transport within the EU in 2009. Save Germany and the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Poland and Belgium are also important players in the cabotage market. Since 14 May 2010, new, more rigid cabotage rules  apply in the EU.

Dutch cabotage hauliers chiefly active in adjacent countries

Dutch hauliers carry four times as many goods in other European countries as foreign hauliers in the Nedtherlands. Dutch hauliers are predominantly active in Germany and Belgium. Three quarters of total cabotage transport by Dutch hauliers within the EU was carried out in these countries in 2009. With 11 percent, the United Kingdom was in third place.

Belgium, Germany and Poland largest cabotage hauliers in the Netherlands

Foreign cabotage hauliers carried more than 3 million tons of goods within the Dutch borders in 2009, i.e. nearly 1 percent of total domestic transport.

Belgium accounted for the bulk of cabotage transport in the Netherlands (42 percent), followed by Germany (28 percent) and Poland with 17 percent.
