Description topics

Smoking behaviour, 12 years or older

Questions on smoking behaviour are asked to persons aged 12 years or older.

Smoking status

Former smokers: The percentage of persons in the population aged 12 years or older who answered No to the question: Do you ever smoke? and Yes to the question: Have you ever smoked?

Former cigarette smokers

Smoking years former smokers: Number of years that a former cigarette smoker aged 12 years or older has smoked cigarettes.

Quitting years former smokers: Number of years since former cigarette smokers aged 12 years or older quitted smoking cigarettes.

Alcohol consumption, 12 years or older

The questions on consuming alcohol are asked to all persons aged 12 years or older.

Drink status

Former drinkers: The percentage of persons in the population aged 12 years or older that answered ‘No’ to the question: ‘Did you ever drink an alcoholic beverage during the last 12 months, such as beer, wine, spirits, mixed drinks or cocktails? Beer without alcohol or containing only little alcohol does not count.’, and ‘Yes’ to the question: ‘Did you ever drink alcohol?’ From 2020, this question has been changed to: ‘Have you ever drunk alcohol in the past 12 months, for example beer, wine, spirits, mixed drinks or cocktails? By this we also mean low-alcohol beer, but not non-alcoholic beer’.

Giving informal care, 16 years or older

Informal care (in Dutch: mantelzorg) is care given to an acquaintance in ones surroundings, e.g. a partner, child or friend, if this person is sick for a long time, infirm or handicapped. Informal care can consist of doing housework, washing and dressing, companionship, transportation, arranging financial matters and so on. Informal care is not paid.

Informal care giver: Percentage of persons giving informal care. The informal care has lasted for at least three months already, or there must be at least 8 hours of care per week.

Hours of informal care per week: The average number of hours of care given per week, by an informal care giver.

Strained informal care givers: The percentage of informal care givers who report fairly heavily strained, very heavily strained or being overloaded by that care.
