This table provides data on contacts of the Dutch population with providers of medical care, including data on hospitalisation and the use of medicines. It covers the following aspects:

- contacts with GP
- contacts with medical specialists
- contacts with dentist
- contacts with physiotherapist/remedial therapist
- contacts with alternative healers
- hospitalisations, with and without overnight stay
- use of medicines, prescribed and non-prescribed
- satisfaction with GP, specialist, dentist, physiotherapist, hospital

The data are based on the Health Interview Survey conducted by Statistics Netherlands. They can be broken down by a number of personal characteristics. The Health Interview Survey is a continuous survey. Its population consists of Dutch residents of all ages in private households.

Contact with medical specialist

Contact with medical specialists in the Netherlands, in:
- out-patient department
- hospital department
- emergency department
- practice outside the hospital
- private clinic
Contacts during hospital or day admissions are not included. Contacts with psychiatrists are also not included.

Location of contact with specialist

Distribution of contacts with medical specialists by where these took place.

In hospital incl. out-patient department: Percentage of contacts with a medical specialist taking place in a hospital (incl. out-patient department).

By telephone: Percentage of contacts with a medical specialist by telephone.

Other: Percentage of contacts with a medical specialist not taking place in a hospital (incl. out-patient department), but at locations such as the emergency department, practice outside the hospital, private clinic, or somewhere else.

Type of contact with specialist

Distribution of contacts with medical specialists by type of contact: first contact or repeat visit.

First contact: Percentage of contacts with a medical specialist that are first contacts.

Repeat visit: Percentage of contacts with a medical specialist that are repeat visits.

Initiative to contact specialist

Initiative to contact a medical specialist:
- request or initiative of patient
- referred on initiative of GP
- called by specialist

Other: Percentage of contacts with a medical specialist not at own request or on own initiative, not after referral by GP and not after a call from specialist.

Satisfaction with the specialist: Average of respondents' evaluations regarding the most recently consulted medical specialist.
Question: 'Please, give a mark out of ten for your (child's) medical specialist, where 1 represents very poor, 10 represents excellent.
