Agricultural and horticultural holdings

Arable crops

Includes land with arable crops and land ready for cultivation. Contract
grown crops for third parties are also included. Uncultivated land at the
time of the census is included in the category of the next planned crop.
Seed for sowing is included in the arable crop concerned. The category
'Other arable crops' comprises unspecified seeds. Catch crops grown after
the main crop has been cleared are not included. Nurse crops are also
included.

Root and tuber crops

Comprises:
- seed potatoes on sandy or peat soil ;
- seed potatoes on clay soil;
- potatoes for human consumption on sandy or peat soil;
- potatoes for human consumption on clay soil;
- starch potatoes;
- sugar beets; and
- fodder beets.

Horticulture in the open

Includes areas with horticultural crops at the time of the census as well
as uncultivated areas where horticultural crops were planned. Also
included are crops which were initially grown under glass but subsequently
in the open and crops grown under flat glass.

Pome and stone fruit by area

Comprises:
- apples;
- pears; and
- other pome and stone fruit.

Fast-growing wood

From 1993, fast-growing wood is a separate category. From 1996,
fast-growing wood is included in cultivated land measured size.

Fallow land

Fallow land has not been tilled in the current year. This category also
includes land untilled in accordance with the set-aside scheme. Green
manure and forest cultivation are categorised as such.
