they spent in the establishments. The figures can be broken
down by type of accommodation.

Sleeping-places in cottages or holiday homes that are rented a holiday
for more than two months are included until 1988. In the
following years they are excluded.

- Every night that a guest spends in an overnight accommodation (excluding
permanent guests who stay longer than 2 months)- All countries
- Hotels/boarding houses/youth hostels
- Hotel: an establishment providing overnight accommodation that can be
booked per night and which may provide meals, snacks and beverages
to guests and non-guests. A guest is a person staying in the hotel
overnight, a non-guest is someone who is not staying in the hotel.
Boarding house: an establishment providing mainly overnight
accommodation that cannot be booked per night, and which may provide
meals, snacks and beverages to guests but not to non-guests. The
essential difference between a hotel and a boarding house is that a hotel
does provide food and drink for non-guests, while a boarding house does
not.
Youth accommodation comprises youth hotels and hostels (with mainly
young guests) and accommodation for groups at farms, camps, large
holiday homes, children's holiday homes, nature camps, stables and
sailing/outdoor adventure organisations.
Apartments with hotel services belong to the category hotels, boarding
houses and youth accommodation, and the establishment itself
determines whether it is hotel or a boarding house.
Youth accommodation are included from 1998. Until then youth
accommodation was categorised as a group accommodation.- Sleeping-places
- In a hotel and boarding houses all single beds are counted as one
sleeping-place All double bed are counted as two sleeping-places.
Occasional beds and beds in annexes are not included.

- Every night that a guest spends in an accommodation (hotel, boarding
house, camp site, holiday park and group accommodation) excluding
permanent guests who stay longer than 2 months.- All countries

- These are establishments in the Netherlands that provide accommodation
of one of the following types:
- camp sites
- holiday parks
- group accommodation
The term group accommodation includes accommodation for groups at
farms, camps, large holiday homes, children's holiday homes, nature
camps, stables and sailing/outdoor adventure organisations.
Until 1998 youth hotels and youth hostels are counted as
group accommodation establishments. From 1998 they are categorised
as a hotel. Until 1987 the figures cover only the summer
season i.e. the months April to September, from 1987 they cover all
months of the year.- Sleeping-places
- In holiday parks and group accommodation establishments all single beds
are counted as one sleeping-place and double beds as two sleeping
places. Sleeping-places in permently hired cottages or holidayhomes
are not included.
On campsites a pitch counts for five sleeping-places. Until 1998
this was four sleeping-places. Sleeping-places on fixed pitches are

- A camp site is (part of) an area with at least sanitary facilities,
on which paying guests can spend the night in tents, caravans,
campers, cottages and hiker's cabins.
- On holiday parks
- A holiday park consists of a number of summer cottages, holiday cottages
and holiday apartments, in as far as these are predominantly available for
rent by the owner or the manager of the park.
Holiday apartments with hotel services are categorised as (apartment)
hotels and not as holiday parks.
- In group accommodation
- Accommodation providing lodging mainly to groups (not families), with
sleeping-places in rooms, dormitories, holiday chalets, cabins,
apartments or tents which guests may have to share with strangers.
The term 'group accommodation' includes accommodation for groups at
farms, camps, large holiday homes, children's holiday homes, nature
camps, stables and sailing/outdoor adventure organisations.
