Description topics

Output (basic prices)
Output includes the value of all goods, sold and unsold, and the
revenue of services rendered. Output furthermore includes own-account
capital formation, housing services and agricultural products for own
final consumption. The output value is calculated at basic prices. The
basic price is the price excluding profit margins for trade and
transport by third parties and the balance of product-related taxes
(e.g. VAT) and subsidies.
Intermediate consumption
Intermediate consumption includes all products used in the production
process in the period under review as well as raw materials,
semi manufactured articles, fuels, communication services, cleansing
services and audits by accountants. Intermediate consumption is valued at
purchasers' prices, excluding deductible VAT but including non-deductible
VAT paid by enterprises exempt from VAT taxation.
Gross value added
Value added at basic prices per sector is equal to the difference between
output (at basic prices) and intermediate consumption (at purchasers'
prices).
Compensation of employees
Payments to employees refers to money received by employees for doing
work. Employees include all residents and non-residents working for
employers. Employees also include general managers of limited liability
companies and private companies, thus, their salaries are also included in
payments to employees. The same applies to employees in sheltered
workshops.
Payments to employees consist of wages and social insurance premiums
paid by employers. In addition, wages include gratuities, payment for
overtime, tips and commissions, payments in kind (free
accommodation, free food, company car, contribution to child care, cheap
travel) and holiday allowances. Payments to cover travelling expenses
are included in wages.
Employers actual social contributions consist of the payments made by
employers for the benefit of their employees to insurers (social security
funds and private funded schemes). These payments cover statutory,
conventional, contractual and voluntary contributions in respect of
insurance against social risks or needs. Although paid directly by
employers to the insurers, these employers contributions are treated as
a component of the compensation of employees, who are then deemed to
pay them over to the insurers.
Taxes, not product-related
These taxes include all taxes on output manufacturers have to pay,
irrespective of the volume of the produced or sold goods, e.g. real estate
tax, refuse collection rates and sewerage charges paid by manufacturers.
Subsidies, not product-related
Included are all other subsidies on output. These subsidies are not
directly related to value or volume of the manufactured or sold goods.
They are mainly subsidies on wages.
Gross operating surplus
The gross operating surplus per sector is the balance of value added at
basic prices minus compensation of employees and the balance of not
product-related taxes on output and not product-related subsidies on
output. When referring to self-employed, this balance is termed mixed
income as it also includes compensation for work they have done.
On the level of the total economy, the operating surplus is determined by
the sum of the total of the sectors and the difference between imputed and
paid VAT less the consumption of imputed bank services.
Labour input of employees
Labour input of employees is defined as the number of full-time
equivalent jobs.
Part-time jobs are converted to full-time jobs. This implies that the
notion 'years in employment' may vary. Data on labour input of
self-employed and family workers are not included in this publication.
