This table provides data about the health, lifestyle and medical and use of medical care of the Dutch population.
The data are based on the Health Interview Survey conducted by Statistics Netherlands. The Health Interview Survey is a continuous survey. Its population consists of Dutch residents of all ages in private households.

Data available from 2000 till 2009.

Lifestyle
Smoking
In the 2001 basic questionnaire the respondent's smoking behaviour is
surveyed. The oral part of the health module elaborates on smoking
behaviour. Until 2001, information on smoking behaviour came from the
written part of the Health Survey.
Smokers
% persons in the population who answered 'yes' to the question: Do you
occasionally smoke? Refers to persons in the age category 12 years and
over.
Heavy smokers in the population
% of persons in the population who smoke 20 cigarettes a day or more.
Persons who only smoke a pipe and/or cigars are included as smoker with 0
cigarettes a day.
Refers to persons in the age category 12 years and over.
Heavy smokers among smokers
% of smokers who smoke 20 cigarettes a day or more. Refers to persons in
the age category 12 years and over.
Persons who only smoke a pipe and/or cigars are included as smoker with 0
cigarettes a day.
Cigarettes per day per smoker
Daily number of cigarettes per smoker. Refers to persons in the age
category 12 years and over.
Persons who only smoke a pipe and/or cigars are included as smoker with 0
cigarettes a day.
Number of years smoking present smokers
Number of years a present smoker smokes cigarettes. Refers to persons in
the age category 12 years and over.
For persons who have quit smoking cigarettes, but who do still smoke

Number of years a former smoker of cigarettes smoked cigarettes. Refers
to persons in the age category 12 years and over.
Years since former smokers stopped
Number of years since a former smoker of cigarettes stopped smoking
cigarettes. Refers to persons in the age category 12 years and over.
Alcohol consumption
Heavy drinker
Heavy drinker.
Percentage of persons (12+) who drink at least 6 glasses of alcohol within
24 hours at least once a week.
