HSMR 2021 Methodological report

Statistics Netherlands has calculated The Hospital Standardised Mortality Ratios (HSMRs) for Dutch hospitals for the period 2019-2021. This report describes the methods that were used.

Excel file ‘Classification of variables HSMR 2021’ contains the classifications used for the diagnosis groups, severity of main diagnosis, socio-economic status and source of admission.

Excel file ‘Coefficients HSMR 2021’ contains the coefficients and standard errors of the HSMR model by diagnosis group.

Like in previous years, the HSMRs were calculated for the regular (non-COVID-19) hospital care. For hospital admissions in 2021 with COVID-19 as main diagnosis a separate SMR model was developed. This is described in chapter 5 of the HSMR 2021 Methodological Report (see ‘Downloads’ beneath).
