Income quintiles

The classification into income quintiles means that, of all households in the Netherlands, the 20 percent with the lowest standardised incomes fall into the first income quintile, the next 20 percent into the second income quintile, and so on. The equivalised income is the disposable income adjusted for differences in household size and composition.

The lowest-income group is very diverse in its composition. In addition to people receiving social assistance benefit, this figure also includes, amongst others, self-employed people with a negative income.
