Eutrophication occurs when excess phosphorus and nitrogen compounds enter surface water. This can lead to excessive algae growth (algal blooms), which causes aquatic plants and certain fish species to die off. Excess blue-green algae also affects outdoor swimming sites, making them unsuitable for swimming.
