Heavy metals are frequently found in the built environment where they can enter the sewerage system through corrosion (weathering) via runoff with rainwater or through wastewater, for example in zinc gutters, galvanized steel street furniture such as railings and lampposts, stainless steel surfaces (containing nickel and chromium) and copper water pipes. Some of this can be avoided through the use of alternative materials.
