This is determined by agricultural practices such as the use of fertilizer (both current and historical) and by soil processes such as the movement of nutrient-rich water and mineralisation. In addition to run-off from agricultural land, the Netherlands Pollutant Release and Transfer Register differentiates between direct sources in agriculture (e.g. farmyard run-off and manure that accidentally ends up in ditches during application), as well as specific emissions from greenhouse horticulture.
