Nutrient-rich water is water containing high concentrations of nutrients such as nitrogen compounds and phosphates. It is a key factor in determining which plants and animals can survive in a specific area. If nutrient levels continue to rise, due to increased availability of nitrogen, some species (such as algae or duckweed) may benefit from this more readily or more quickly than other species. These species then dominate the entire area, often at the expense of indigenous and rare species.
