Nature monitoring networks are part of the Network Ecological Monitoring (NEM). This is a partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, the provincial authorities and several government organisations, including Statistics Netherlands. The partnership aims to align nature monitoring networks with the information needs of the Dutch government at national and international levels. Important international monitoring obligations stem from the European Union's bird and habitat directives, among others. See: Netwerk Ecologische Monitoring (in Dutch).
