Freshwater habitat types

Some of the animal species included in the Freshwater Living Planet Index (LPI) live mainly in one of three types of freshwater ecosystems: (1) streams and rivers, (2) lakes and marshes, and (3) fens and raised bogs. Experts have classified each of the animal species according to these water types and then converted them into sub-indices. These only include species that typically live (primarily) in the relevant type of waters or spend a crucial part of their lives there. These species provide a clear indication of the state of the relevant aquatic ecosystem type.
