Retail turnover up by 1.3 percent in February

Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports that retail turnover was 1.3 percent higher in February 2025, year on year. Sales volume was up by 0.6 percent. Turnover in the non-food sector (including retail not in shops) increased by 1.2 percent, and turnover in the food sector (shops selling food, beverages and tobacco) increased by 1.4 percent. Meanwhile, online retail turnover grew by 3.4 percent, year on year.

The figures for retail turnover have been adjusted for calendar days in February, because more is sold on certain days of the week than on other days. Without such an adjustment, retail turnover in February would have been 1.3 percent higher than the previous year.

Turnover in non-food sector up by 1.2 percent

Turnover in the non-food sector was up by 1.2 percent in February, year on year. Sales volume (turnover adjusted for price changes) was up by 1.0 percent on February 2025.

Turnover in shops selling home furnishings grew by 5.5 percent, year on year. Turnover among chemists grew by 5.3 percent, and among shops selling consumer electronics it grew by almost 3 percent. Turnover in clothes shops and those selling footwear and leather products each grew by almost 2 percent. Turnover in shops selling recreational goods remained the same.

Turnover in food sector up by 1.4 percent

Turnover in shops selling food, beverages and tobacco was up by 1.4 percent in February, year on year. Sales volume was 0.2 percent lower. Turnover in supermarkets was up by 1.6 percent, while in specialty shops it grew by 0.1 percent.

Online turnover 3.4 percent higher

Turnover among online retailers was up by 3.4 percent in February, year on year. Online retailers (whose core activity is selling goods and services over the internet) recorded an increase in turnover of 2.9 percent. Online turnover among multi-channel retailers (retailers selling goods and services over the internet as a secondary activity) was up by 4.4 percent.

Online turnover for food and personal care products was up by almost 9 percent, year on year. Online turnover for other non-food products, clothing and fashion items also grew, by 3.7 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively. Online turnover for consumer electronics remained unchanged.
